The Melby Ranch guest lodge is on the lakeshore on the east mesa. East mesa lots are not far from the lake and are typically 2.5 acres. South mesa lots are larger and the most expensive, including large estates. There is a grass airstrip there.
Power lines run along Wild Horse Drive across the center and east side of the mesa to the lodge.
The west mesa has lots, homes and cabins with electricity along Mesa Drive West, and a view of the valley to the west. Along the west base of the mesa, there are lots available at the valley level, along Highway 159, and lots rising up in elevation to the rim of the mesa, providing a valley view. There are also lots near electricity in this section, and the highway provides quick access to San Luis or a drive to Fort Garland, Blanca, Alamosa, La Veta, Walsenburg, or Taos. Alamosa is about 45 minutes to the northwest.
There are some wells on the mesa, but many residents have water delivered to water storage tanks (cisterns). In areas without electricity, generators, solar panels, batteries and wind powered generators are used. Cell phone service is available in the area, but signal strength varies with the terrain. Residents use satellite receivers for TV and high speed Internet service. Wireless Internet service is being studied by several companies.
There are year round residents on the mesa and vacation homes for summer visitors. On Wild Horse Drive, on the east side of the mesa, there is a building housing the Wild Horse Mesa Volunteer Fire Department and Community Center. Wild Horse Mesa Bible Church is north of the community center, on Wild Horse Drive, near the lake. Main roads are dirt can be muddy at times, depending on the weather. Side roads may be dirt tracks or grass.
Access is from Colorado Highway 159 on the west side or from local roads east of San Luis to the northeast side of the mesa. (See Map below for directions.)
